Therapy/Service/Emotional Support Dogs DESDEFINING TERMS: Therapy vs. Service vs. Emotional support Dogs DESDEFINING TERMS: Therapy vs. Service vs. Emotional Support Dogs These three categories of work dogs are often misunderstood, confused with each other, are indistinctly used as if all were equal, and/or unknown to the general public. As a therapy dog handler, you may be asked what defines a therapy dog, and what difference service therapy dogs and emotional support dogs. The following brief explanations and graphics will be a great reference in these situations. What is a service dog? What is a service dog? According to the Law of Americans with Disabilities, the legal definition of a dog of service is a dog that has been trained individually to do work or perform tasks that mitigate the effects of a person's disability. Examples are a dog that alerts its diabetic handler to low blood sugar, a dog that opens doors, lights up, and collects fallen objects for a person who uses a wheelchair, and guides and listens alert dogs for blind or deaf manipulators. Service dogs must be trained to the highest possible standards, such as those established by Assistance Dogs International (. However, it is not legally required that service dogs be trained professionally (in other words, individual manipulators can train their own service dogs, even if they have no relevant training or credentials experience). The "certification" of the service dog is something of a misnomer, because in reality there is no legally established certification for service dogs. They simply must form specific tasks directly related to a person's disability. They must also be very well behaved in public places, and able to work in the midst of significant distraction. Service dogs can be coupled in vests or layers to identify them as service dogs, however this is not legally required, nor are they any kind of identification labels, cards or paperwork. What is a therapy dog? Therapy Dogs also receive extensive training but have a completely different type of work than service dogs. Their responsibilities are to provide psychological and emotional comfort to people who are not their handlers; who are generally their owners. These dogs have stable tempers and friendly and easy-to-manage personalities. They usually visit institutions such as hospitals, schools, hospices, psychotherapy offices, nursing homes and more. Unlike service dogs, therapy dogs are encouraged to socialize and interact with a variety of people while in service. Something similar to service dogs, therapy dogs can have a variety of jobs. Although most people are familiar with therapy dogs who visit places such as hospitals, nursing homes and hospices to provide emotional therapy, these are not the only environments where therapy dogs can be beneficial. Therapy dogs can also visit schools, nurseries, group homes and rehabilitation centers. Its functions range from dogs that give disabled children the confidence to read out loud to participate actively in physical rehabilitation therapy. In some cases, a therapy dog will work in a particular establishment exclusively, such as a psychotherapy practice. Therapy dogs can be trained by almost anyone, but they must meet the standards established by a particular organization to be certified and actively participate within the respective organization. They are usually managed by their owners, but in some cases animal-assisted therapy, the therapy dog can be handled by a trained professional. It is important to note that, despite the complete formation, certification and the therapeutic benefits provided by the therapy dogs, they do not have the same jobs or the legal designation as service dogs. Although some institutions offer access to therapy dogs in a case-by-case case for the benefit of patients, customers or clients, manipulators or owners of therapy dogs do not have the same rights to be accompanied by these dogs in places where pets are not allowed. What is an emotional support dog? What is an emotional support dog? An emotional support Animal is a common dog or other animal that provides emotional support to a handler who is severely depressed, has social anxiety, is greater and requires the companion animal for stability and purpose in life, etc. If a psychiatrist or MD determines that a mentally ill patient would benefit from the company of an emotional support animal, an ESA may be "prescribed" usually by writing a letter indicating so much. This type of card allows ESA to live in homes that otherwise do not allow pets, and/or travel with their handlers in the cabin of a plane. ESAs are not trained tasks as service dogs. Little training is required, as long as the animal is reasonably well behaved by general pet standards. This means that the animal is trained for potty and has no bad habits that would disturb neighbors as frequent or prolonged episodes of barking. The animal should not pose a danger to other tenants or to working men. But there is no requirement for specific training or mitigation tasks, as emotional support animals are not usually taken anywhere where pets would not normally go without permission.
