I just graduated from college and was moving home to Helena, MT to start my career as a registered nurse. I've recently finished a 4-year relationship with my boyfriend. My life changed dramatically when I moved home. I woke up one morning and realized. I thought I'd slept wrong or squeezed a muscle. The pain continued throughout the day and over the next few days. Little by little I noticed that my left side was hurting, in the middle of my lung, but again I thought it was because I was "without form" or had hurt me. The pain lasted about 2 weeks and became worse, to the extent that the pain of sleeping was so intense that I had gotten used to sleeping in a recliner, sitting, to avoid pain. My shortness of breath worsened and I thought it was because I was "no shape" so I continued working at a gym, up from 2 hours a day. I saw my primary care provider who recommended me get an X-Ray. He said he probably had two broken ribs and sent me home. The pain continued and my mother and I started our investigation. I went back to my doctor who did another chest X-ray and diagnosed my pneumonia. Like RN myself, when I looked at the X-Ray seemed to be an infection invading both of my lungs, as much worse as I had seen any pneumonia. A Z backpack was prescribed (antibiotics) and told me to come back in 3 days if I did not improve. I was also given narcotics (very strong pain medicine), which didn't even touch the pain I was having. Three days later, I went to the ER because I was just getting worse. I was sleeping at an angle of 90 degrees, I couldn't work anymore, and the pain of working was more than I could handle. I could barely walk around my unit in the hospital without feeling like I had handled a marathon. I saw a PA (physical astery) that finally decided to complete some blood tests, checking my (a blood test that measures a released material when blood clots break and helps diagnose blood clots) "just in case." She called me an hour later to tell me that she had a hospital appointment in an hour I had to go to. After a CT scan of contrast (an X-ray that can take detailed pictures of the blood vessels in the lungs), the radiologist told me that he had a pulmonary shower embolism (multiple) (pulmonary lungs, also called "PE") in both lungs. I was transported immediately to the heart emergency room and shortly after being admitted to the hospital to fight the clots. After one night, I was discharged home to give me two shots a day, followed by Coumadin® therapy (or oral thinners or anticlotting medications) for three months. My pain went slowly and my life became "normal," as much as I could as a 21-year-old Coumadin® patient. This disease has changed my life, I can no longer take, and I am more pleased with any pain I experience in my lungs. Two years later, I still experience daily pain based on my damaged lung tissue. My only risk factor before developing the PE is that it was in estrogen-based birth control pills. I read every label of every medication I take, based on my blood clot history. Since my clots, I've tried my blood completely and I don't have any genetic abnormalities or clotting disorder. My story is so important for women to read. I was in birth control for five years before they changed me to a "cheaper" birth control pill and set clots in my lungs. They never found any evidence of a DVT (deep vein thrombosis or leg clots). Today, I take progestin ONLY birth control and I am "almost" back to normal with respect to lung function.
